Summer Challenge 2013

This summer I decided to participate in a challenge that my friend Brekke (of Studio 15 Portraits) started. Normally I don’t participate in photo challenges, because I know I won’t be able to complete them. I know myself well enough to know that the thought of falling short will make me feel like I have failed and then I’ll feel guilty. But, this year I feel like I need to push myself to be more creative, and to take pictures in general, because I get in this bad habit of getting caught up in life and not creating. Go figure. So I decided I was going to just give it a try.

The challenge is to take a picture of one of your children every day this summer. Whoa. That’s a whole lot of picture taking. My fears:

  1. That they will all look the same (ahem…the same ol’ typical portraits i generally take)
  2. That I’ll forget (yep, it already happened one day)
  3. That my kids will get sick of me
  4. That I’ll get sick of it/bored of it/won’t follow through
  5. That I won’t grow (and will thereby feel like a failure…do see a recurring theme?)

So the first couple of days were simple portraits. I attribute it to just starting out, the fact that my kids were still in school, and my littlest had a bad stomach bug, so I didn’t want to go anywhere. But, then I sent the kids outside to play one evening. I heard them having fun, giggling, etc, and it dawned on me to go outside and snap a few…I’m brilliant, I know. Actually I tend to hermit it up inside and praise everything around when the kids can go outside to blow off steam and give me a few moments of peace and quiet.

I caught this image of Sophia flying on the swings. I love how it captures her so perfectly as she is at this stage. Happy, active, full of life. ¬†And I’m left reminded the importance of remembering the goodness in my little ones, because really , there is so much goodness.
